Applicant Eligibility Information for the 2006-2007 School Year

All applicants must be teaching under valid NYS initial/provisional or permanent/professional certification and serving in an eligible school indicated on the TOT school list. Teachers are also required to work the full ten month school year (September-June).

Category Information:

NEWLY HIRED CERTIFIED TEACHERS (TOT1)
  • To be eligible, you must be a newly hired certified classroom teacher in a designated school, as indicated on the programs eligible school list. Newly hired teachers are defined as those who have no prior employment with the NYC public schools. Eligible teachers must work in their school for one full year (10 month school year) and may receive a grant award in the amount of $3,400. Awards may be renewed for three additional consecutive school years for a total of $13,600 subject to statute and funding availability.
  • All applicants must complete the online application.
  • A meeting with initial eligible applicants will be scheduled in July at which time the applicant will be required to:
    • Produce an original end-of-year rating.
    • Sign two participant agreements.
    • Confirm demographic information on file.
INCUMBENT CERTIFIED TEACHERS APPLYING FOR TUITION REIMBURSEMENT (TOT2-R)
  • Incumbent certified classroom teachers who work in designated schools, as indicated on the programs eligible school list, may qualify for tuition reimbursement for hours credited for a first Master's degree leading to NYS Professional Certification. Eligible teachers must work in their school for one full year (10 month school year). Reimbursement will only be provided for courses taken during the summer 2006, fall 2006 and spring 2007 semesters for a maximum of $3,400 per year. Awards may be renewed for three additional consecutive school years for a total of $13,600, subject to statute and funding availability.
  • All applicants must complete the online application.
  • A meeting with initial eligible applicants will be scheduled in July at which time the applicant will be required to:
    • Produce an original end-of-year rating.
    • Sign two participant agreements.
    • Confirm demographic information on file.
    • Provide a transcript or grade report from an accredited institution of higher education verifying successful completion of courses taken.
    • Provide proof of payment, illustrating tuition costs, which may include:
      • A bursar's receipt indicating proof of payment; or
      • A bursar's receipt and a copy of your cancelled check, or bank statement, or credit card statement showing payment to the school administering the course as proof of payment; or
      • A letter or a statement on stationery of an accredited institution of higher education indicating successful completion of coursework, cost of coursework, and proof of payment.
      NOTE: Account activity/billing statements are not acceptable proof of payment.
INCUMBENT CERTIFIED TEACHERS APPLYING FOR LOAN FORGIVENESS (TOT2-L)
  • Incumbent certified classroom teachers who work in designated schools, as indicated on the programs eligible school list, may qualify for loan forgiveness for courses credits earned for a first Master's degree leading to NYS Permanent/Professional Certification. Eligible teachers must work in their school for one full year (10 month school year). Awards may be renewed for three additional consecutive school years for a total of $13,600 subject to statute and funding availability.
  • Initially eligible participants will be contacted during the spring and are required to submit the following:
    • transcript documenting successful completion of coursework for the first master's degree and award date and
    • proof of current loan indebtedness including loan disbursement dates and amounts from issuing loan company. Please Note: Credit card consolidation loans are ineligible for reimbursement.
  • All applicants must complete the online application.
  • A meeting with the participants will be held in July at which time the applicant will be required to:
    • Produce an original end-of-year rating.
    • Sign two participant agreements.
    • Confirm demographic information
CONTINUING PARTICIPANTS: Participants who received funding through the four year program during the 2005-2006 school year will be contacted directly regarding continued eligibility and application verification.

EXTENSTIONS: Candidates are required to meet all posted deadlines. No extensions will be granted. Therefore, timely submission of all documents is necessary.

SERVICE AGREEMENT:
To receive the award for that year, participants must remain teaching under a valid initial, provisional, professional or permanent NYS certificate in the designated school for one full school year with a satisfactory rating. Teachers who take any type of leave of absence in any form for any part of the year are ineligible to receive the grant.


RESTRICTION:

Individuals who have benefited from any other Department of Education Incentive Program such as the Scholarship Program or the NYC Teaching Fellows Program are not eligible for this program. This, however, does not apply for teachers who are currently participating in the Conversion Program or housing program. Teachers who are currently participating in the Conversion Program and Housing Program may apply for consideration.

PLEASE NOTE: Teachers of Tomorrow participants are only eligible to receive funding over four consecutive school years. Therefore, if you began the program during the 2000-01, 2001-02 or 2002-2003 school year, you are no longer eligible to participate.

  • Be informed, teachers serving under an internship certificate, transitional or limited certificate are ineligible for participation. All participants must hold initial, provisional, professional or permanent NYS certification in the area for which they are teaching.
  •
